UC Berkeley — Right-wing firebrand, Ben Shapiro, came to give a speech at the UC Berkeley campus in Calif. on September 15, 2017. Starting at 5 a.m. UCPD set a myriad of barricades around Zellerbach Hall where Shapiro was planned to make an appearance. Police cleared out Sproul Hall at 4 p.m. not allowing any outside entry unless participants showed event tickets. At the peak of the protest, a thousand protesters were congregated outside of Martin Luther King Jr. Student Union on the intersection of Bancroft Way and Telegraph Ave. The night ended with hostility between the left and right winged event attendees. On February 1st, 2017 — Milo Yiannopoulous, an outspoken member of the GOP — came to the University of California-Berkeley campus to give a speech. Since he was invited by the Berkeley College Republicans, he had the stage at the campus.
During the time of his arrival on campus, masked agitators came to protest and ultimately destroyed parts of campus, causing an estimated $100,000 of damage. The masked agitators destroyed property at the Amazon student store located at the campus student union. The night progressed with tear gas and rubber bullets.
